Stabiae Villa San Marco updated on pompeiiinpictures

We have significantly updated the pompeiiinpictures pages for the Villa San Marco with new photographs from our recent trip, the Jashemski Archive and from other contributors.

Villa Poppea now has photos of some of the rooms we had been unable to access.
Our thanks to Drew Baker and Martin Blazeby for these.

Villa of L. Crassius Tertius has been updated with photos from 2005.
Our thanks to Massimo Gravili for these.

There are now four new villas added in addition to Villa San Marco.

Stabiae Villa San Marco                           Villa San Marco
Oplontis Villa di Poppea                           Villa Poppea
Oplontis Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius    Villa L. Crassius Tertius

Stabiae Villa Arianna                              Villa Arianna
Stabiae Secondo Complesso                   Secondo Complesso

Our thanks also Buzz Ferebee and Michael Binns for their valued contributions to several villas.

Our front page has also been revised to separate the site content for Pompeii, Boscoreale, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Scafati and Stabiae.

There is now a list and location plan of 103 villas in Pompeii and in the area between Vesuvius and Stabia at Villa locations. Most of these villas were reburied after excavation and are not able to be visited and unfortunately this means that for these we do not have any photographs.

New villas on pompeiiinpictures

On our recent trip we were delighted to be able to go and see Villa Arianna at Stabiae. What a gem.

However looking through our pictures when we got home we were dismayed to see the deterioration over 10 years. Lets hope some money can be allocated to it.

The Villa Arianna custodians' were excellent, so enthusiastic about "their" villa and pointing out things to us that we would easily have missed.

We hope our pictures encourage others to discover its whereabouts and visit it.

Whilst we were there we were told about an exhibition at Quisisana which runs until the end of December. This exhibition appears to contain many frescoes and items from the villas, formerly in the Stabiano Antiquarium. However it seems you need a car to get to it and we did not have one so will try to visit it in December. Has anybody been to the exhibition or got any photos?

We have now added several new villas to our villas page.
